Understanding the Struggle – Helping children who can’t face school

20/01/2026
6-9pm
Gateways, Edgeworth Close, London NW4 4HJ

PaJeS, together with Gateways, the only Jewish alternative educational provider for young people unable to attend mainstream school due to their mental health challenges, invite you to an evening conference focused on EBSA (Emotionally Based School Avoidance).  A growing challenge affecting many children and young people, EBSA describes when a child finds it difficult to attend school due to anxiety, depression, or emotional distress, often leading to reduced timetables and long-term absence. This event aims to raise awareness, share lived experiences, and equip families with strategies to support children struggling with attendance.

Our keynote Speaker is Carrie Grant. Carrie is a singer, television presenter, and author of ‘Special Educational Needs and Disability – A Parent’s Perspective’. She is a passionate advocate for children with SEND and mental health challenges. As a mother of four children with special needs, she speaks openly about her family’s journey and her work supporting over 150 families of autistic young people.

We will also hear from Adam Friel, Partner & Head of Education Law, Geldards LLP, who will be sharing insights on navigating the education system and legal rights for families; and Ali Kosiner, Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist, at Gateways and also The Brent Centre for Young People.   Ali will be offering expert guidance on supporting children whose mental health affects school attendance.

This is an opportunity for parents who are struggling navigating challenges with school attendance, to come together in a safe and supportive environment.
