What we do
WEIZMANN UK’s mission is to communicate and support the work of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and promote increased collaboration between the Institute and UK universities.
Science education is a high priority for the Weizmann Institute of Science and Weizmann UK aims to bring the Institute’s excellent science education programmes to sixth form students.
What we offer schools
Year 12 – The Weizmann UK Safe Cracking Physics Tournament. Teams of five students design and build a safe with locking mechanisms based on the principles of physics. The top three teams win a travel grant to enable them to participate in the International Safe Cracking Tournament at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel.
Year 13– The Dr Bessie Lawrence International Summer Science Institute (ISSI). An opportunity for students ages 17-18 to spend a month at the Weizmann Institute and become part of a research team alongside leading scientists. Students work on cutting edge research projects as well as having the opportunity to explore Israel and make life-long friends with over 80 like-minded students. Each year Weizmann UK have 10 scholarship funded places for UK students.
Cost to school
Dependent on programme but heavily funded.
This is what schools say about us
“What makes the Weizmann Institute’s competition so special is the combination of the theoretical physics side with the practical skills needed to build the safe and a bit of creativity thrown in.” Mr Deakin, Physics Teacher talking about the Weizmann UK Safe Cracking Competition.
“The programme made a huge difference to both my confidence and ability, without that I wouldn’t have even been considered for a place at my dream university.” Rhys Jones, ISSI Alumnus 2015
“I was given an opportunity to attend the summer scheme at the Weizmann Institute and I have reaped the benefit ever since.” ISSI Alumus 1988
